Admission routes

Can you get into an IIM without CAT?

Yes for several programmes, and no for the one most people mean. The listicles blur those together. Here is the route map, with the exact test each one asks for.

The short answer

The two-year flagship MBA: CAT, always. Every IIM shortlists it on CAT. The only recognised exception is the foreign-national and NRI category at institutes that accept GMAT for those seats.

Everything else: it depends on the programme. Executive routes take GMAT or GRE. The five-year integrated programme takes IPMAT. Executive-education and certificate programmes usually take no test at all.

If someone offers to arrange a seat on the flagship MBA without a CAT score, that is not a route — it is the warning sign. No fee buys an IIM seat and no consultant influences an IIM admission decision.

What each route actually asks for

RouteEntranceWho it is forWhat it awards
Flagship MBA / PGPCATGraduates, typically 0–3 years of experienceMBA — a degree, post-2018
Executive / one-year (EPGP, PGPX, MBA-Ex)GMAT or GRESeveral years of work experienceAn IIM award; check the exact title
Integrated five-year (IPM)IPMAT or JIPMATStraight after class 12BBA-equivalent plus MBA
Executive education / certificateUsually noneWorking professionals, any stageA certificate naming the programme
Doctoral (PhD, formerly FPM)CAT, GMAT, GRE or UGC-NET, by instituteResearch careersPhD — a degree, post-2018

The award column matters more than it looks. Until 2018 an IIM awarded a diploma rather than a degree, and the executive and certificate routes still do not all award an MBA. Read the certificate name, not the institute name.

The 18 IIMs with an executive or one-year route

These are the institutes whose programme list includes an executive or one-year route — the realistic answer for someone who cannot leave a job for two years and does not want to sit CAT. The names vary (EPGP, PGPX, PGPEX, MBA-Ex); the entrance does not.

The six with a five-year integrated programme

The only route into an IIM that does not require a bachelor’s degree first, because the degree is part of the programme. Entrance is IPMAT or JIPMAT, taken after class 12.

And the ones with open-enrolment executive education

IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Mumbai, IIM Shillong and IIM Raipur list executive education among their programmes. These typically have no entrance test. They also typically do not confer full alumni status — ask the institute what the specific programme carries before you treat it as an IIM qualification.

If CAT is genuinely not an option

Two honest possibilities, and it is worth being clear which one you are in. If you want the IIM name and network, the executive route is the real answer and it asks for GMAT or GRE plus work experience rather than CAT. If you want the management education itself and the institute name is secondary, the question stops being about IIMs at all — and the price range drops by an order of magnitude.

Neither answer is “there is a back door into the flagship MBA”, because there is not one.

Frequently asked

Can I get into an IIM without CAT?

For some programmes, yes. For the two-year flagship MBA — the one most people mean when they say “an IIM” — no. Every IIM shortlists that programme on CAT, with the narrow exception of foreign-national and NRI candidates at institutes that accept GMAT for those seats.

Which IIM programmes do not need CAT?

The executive and one-year programmes (EPGP, PGPX, MBA-Ex and similarly named) shortlist on GMAT or GRE plus work experience. The five-year integrated programme takes IPMAT or JIPMAT straight after class 12. Executive-education and certificate programmes usually have no entrance test at all.

Is an executive MBA from an IIM the same as the flagship MBA?

It is a genuine IIM award and it is not the same programme. It is shorter, aimed at people with several years of work experience, and admission is on GMAT or GRE plus profile rather than CAT. Check what the certificate actually says before assuming the two are interchangeable.

Do certificate programmes make me an IIM alumnus?

Usually not in the way people assume. Executive-education and certificate programmes often confer participant status rather than full alumni status, and the certificate names the programme rather than an MBA. Ask the institute directly what status the specific programme carries — the answer differs by institute and by programme.

What is IPMAT and who can take it?

IPMAT and JIPMAT are the entrance tests for the five-year Integrated Programme in Management, taken after class 12. It is the only route into an IIM that does not require a bachelor's degree first, because the degree is part of the programme.

Is there any way around CAT for the flagship MBA?

No, and treat any claim otherwise as a warning sign. Nobody can arrange a seat on the two-year MBA without a CAT score, no fee buys one, and no consultant has influence over an IIM admission decision.
